To the winner go the spoils.

In its NCAA tournament debut last season, the Cal women's water polo team endured a battle against Michigan before prevailing, 12-8, in a 4-5 match-up.

This year, the Bears resolved matters quickly.

By virtue of winning the 2011 MPSF tournament, No. 2 Cal was awarded a lighter opening round opponent and took full advantage on Friday -- overwhelming 7th-seeded UC San Diego in an easy 13-5 victory in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Bears received hat tricks from junior Emily Csikos and freshman Ashley Young, who put in the first two goals of the match. Cal found the net four times in each of the first three quarters and entered the final period with a comfortable 12-4 cushion.

Leading big early, the Bears were able to give their starters some rest and preparation for Saturday's national semifinal contest against third-seeded UCLA. With a win, Cal will advance to the program's first ever NCAA title game.
