A man was found shot dead in backyard of a South Berkeley house this afternoon in the city's first homicide of the year.

Following multiple calls to the Berkeley Police Department shortly after 1 p.m., officers arriving at the 1600 block of Blake Street near its intersection with California Street located an unresponsive male victim, who Berkeley Fire Department paramedics pronounced dead at the scene. He had apparently been shot, according to a statement released late this afternoon by Berkeley police Lt. Andrew Greenwood.

According to Greenwood, police are investigating the incident as a homicide.

Police have not released the victim's name and are also not naming any suspects as the investigation is "in its earliest stages," according to the statement.
