Stephen Hale probably loves Hawaii, and not just for the weather and the scenery.

Competing in his sixth tournament for the Cal men's golf team, the then-freshman fired a 10-under in the John Burns Invitational to win his first collegiate individual title.

Two years later, he's got his second chance to take home the Hawaiian hardware.

The Bears return to Leilehua Golf Course in Oahu today for the three-day John Burns Invitational, a 54-hole, par-72 event. There, they'll encounter familiar foes in Arizona, BYU and Fresno St., among others.

This time around, Cal is primed to do better than just an individual title. The Bears have won their last two tournaments -- most recently a come-from-behind effort at the Arizona Intercollegiate on Feb. 1-2 -- and are currently ranked No. 16 in the nation.

The Bears bring a fresh-faced and talented lineup to Oahu. So far this season, four freshmen have played in either the fall or spring campaign. Junior stalwarts Hale and Eric Mina add experience and championships to the roster -- both have won individual titles this season.

Eighteen holes will be played per day, starting this morning and finishing on Friday.
