Three people face vandalism charges after they were caught jamming parking meters in a Northside sting, police said.

In the latest of a series of Berkeley police operations targeting parking meter vandalism, plainclothes traffic officers and parking enforcement representatives kept watch on the 2500 block of Hearst Avenue between 9 and 11:30 a.m.

The sting netted the largest number of arrests of any previous operation. The three suspected vandals were cited and released at the scene, said Berkeley police Officer Mary Kusmiss.

Six parking tickets were also issued on the block where parking meters had been cleared of jams prior to the operation.

"Citizens are going and parking at meters, not making an attempt to put money in them," Kusmiss said. "Some of them unfortunately got citations."

In a similar operation last month two UC Berkeley students were arrested in connection to meter jamming.

The Berkeley Police Department's crackdown on parking meter vandalism began in the spring.
