Whine Cellar: A Pair of Upsets and A Sad Shutout

It's a sad week here in the Cellar, where we definitely would have left in Chad Bradford. So let's get right to it before I start cursing again.

The First Word: Did you catch that huge upset this weekend? The one that was burning up sports talk radio? Yeah, so it wasn't televised, but that shouldn't damper our enthusiasm. I am talking, of course, about the Cal women's volleyball team coming within two points of derailing No. 1 USC. To put the 3-2 and 15-13 in the fifth scores into perspective, consider this: Cal had taken two games off USC in the previous sixteen matches combined. Junior setter Caity Noonan led the Bears with 68 assists.

I May Not Know Everything About Volleyball, But: Damn, that's a lot of assists. Like 58 more than Yinka Dare had in his career.

Noonan Also Set This Lesser-Known Mark: In my former career as a high school sportswriter, I thought I had seen every known variation of "Caitlin" imaginable, but chalk another one up.

The Volleyballers Are Not Yet Ranked Nationally: But they're No. 1 in our hearts, and not only for the Dockers slogan.

Oh, There Was That Other Upset: Which, as I mentioned, wasn't televised, because Fox Sports Net was showing-you guessed it-women's volleyball.

I Am Devoutly Heterosexual and Adore My Girlfriend, But In Honor of National Coming Out Week, A Concession: I have a crush on Jonathan Makonnen.

The Most Shocking Thing I Have Ever Read: Apparently, Cal football has won its last three games on the road against USC.

But Those Last Two Were Coached by Holmoe, Right?: Yeah, I don't get it either.

Speaking of Good Ol' Tommy, I Found a Coaching Job Where He'd Be Right At Home: My intramural softball team dropped a 17-0 heartbreaker in our opener, and I now sport a 38.75 ERA.

But Even In A Blowout, A Moment of Zen: Our umpire, apparently unfamiliar with the scoring system, informed us that we'd need eight points in our last inning to avoid the mercy rule.

The Cal Women's Golf Team Performed Well At the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, So I Did the Only Sensible Thing: But even after a copious Google search, I couldn't figure out what an "Edean Ihlanfeldt" was.

Reason No. 213 Why I Loved Covering Women's Soccer Last Year: Coach Kevin Boyd is one of my favorite people, if only for his skill at saying things that, when broken down, have absolutely no meaning.

For Example, His Statement After Beating Wake Forest: "The entire team was responsible for the win. They create an atmosphere where winning is possible."

Courtesy of Cal Media Relations, Here's The First Tidbit In the Profile Of Men's Soccer Leading Scorer Mike Munoz: "Outstanding Soccer Player."

Which Reminds Me What I Want On My Profile: "Mediocre Writer."

And Finally, Why I Never Comment On Field Hockey: The sport (WHISTLE) is just (WHISTLE) too choppy (WHISTLE) for (WHISTLE) me to (WHISTLE) watch.
