Readers Find Proposition 47 Editorial Informative

Thank you for your editorial regarding the Kindergarten-University Public Education Facilities Bond ("UC Berkeley, Public Schools Need Proposition 47," Sept. 24).

It is important to note that while UC and the UC Berkeley campus are providing educational information on the measure, neither may campaign on its behalf. While individuals connected with UC have expressed strong opinions about the importance of this measure, no UC or campus funds are being spent in support of this proposition. Privately funded UC foundations, alumni associations, student groups and other individuals concerned with public education have provided support for Proposition 47. The UC Board of Regents also unanimously endorsed Proposition 47 at a recent meeting.

UC Berkeley Office of Governmental Affairs

Thank you for writing the editorial supporting Proposition 47 ("UC Berkeley, Public Schools Need Proposition 47," Sept. 24). Too many students do not vote because of the inconvenience of registering, which is why I support Proposition 52 to allow same-day voter registration.

Losing in Style

I am thrilled with the start of this year's football season and feel that we have a great future with Jeff Tedford. That being said, I felt for the first time this season the play calling lacked imagination and was somewhat predictable. I had flashbacks of the painful run/run/pass offenses of coach Holmoe and coach Gilbertson.

I was also disappointed at the disrespect and lack of sportsmanship half our team displayed after the loss. Many Cal football players walked off the field with their heads down, like absolute losers instead of going to the middle of the field to congratulate Air Force.

I read about the "win with class" motto from Tedford; we also need to lose with class.

Student Section Conduct

Something truly ugly happened this weekend. At the Cal football game against Air Force, new Mic Men were trying out to lead the student section's cheers; one of them happened to be a female. Many people were probably surprised by this, as I was, since the role of the Mic Man, as the name suggests, is usually filled by a male student. What I didn't expect, however, was harassment and objectification on the part of a few male students.

I am specifically referring to the dozen or so boys standing beside me who thought of such witty comments as "block that cunt," a distortion of the football chant "block that punt," and "show us your tits."

We can't accept this conduct as a natural proclivity of the young male. There's nothing natural about oppression. Let's put pressure on society to change its ways and not subject our future daughters to such horrors.

Anti-Israel Charges Baseless

None of the accusations against Berkeley's students, faculty and Middle Eastern Studies department have been substantiated with proof ("Letters to the Editor: Web Site Necessary to Combat Anti-Israel Bias," Sept. 24). These charges are intended as a last-resort in an attempt to silence those who question foreign policy at Berkeley and abroad.

Am I biased when I say that the Palestinians have been under military occupation for 35 years? That Israel is in violation of over 70 U.N. resolutions? Since when is stating facts a matter of opinion?
