Man Flashes Knife In Drugstore Raid

A man wielding a seven-inch knife robbed a West Berkeley drugstore of a sizeable amount of nonprescription medicine Sunday evening, police said.

The incident began inside Walgreens at 1050 San Pablo Ave. when the robber hoarded several hundred boxes of Tylenol and Sudafed into some shopping baskets at approximately 5:09 p.m.

Observing the robber's "strange" behavior, the store's assistant manager approached the robber as he tried to leave the store, said Berkeley police Inspector Arnold Lui.

But the man pulled out a knife and pointed it at the store employee, upgrading his status from shoplifter to robber, Lui said.

Robber Steals Cash From Furniture Store

A man made off with an undisclosed amount of money after threatening an employee of a West Berkeley furniture store with what may have been a gun Saturday afternoon, police said.

Entering through the back of Fiddlesticks Furnishing at 2524 San Pablo Ave. about 2 p.m, the robber stuck a hard object into the thigh of an employee and demanded she open the register, said Berkeley police Inspector Arnold Lui.

The woman complied, and the robber took the money and fled.

Suspect Allegedly Sets Fire to Workplace

Police arrested a man on suspicion of arson after he allegedly set his former West Berkeley workplace ablaze last week.

Djillali Belfiroud, 40, had been fired from Designer 4 Less on 3022 San Pablo Ave. a week before he returned Wednesday morning armed with flammable liquid, said Berkeley police Inspector Arnold Lui.

Police and firefighters responded to a fire at the store's rear door about 6:10 a.m. While the blaze itself was largely confined to the door, the resulting smoke and soot damaged a lot of merchandise, Lui said.

Deliverer Surrenders Pizzas to Robbers

A pizza deliverer was robbed of three pies after a band of robbers staged an ambush in South Berkeley early Saturday, police said.

The robbers ambushed the West Coast Pizza deliverer in South Berkeley early Saturday, getting away with three pizzas, police said.

The driver gave the robbers the pizzas after he found himself at the wrong end of a baseball bat on the 3000 block of Tremont Street at 1 a.m.

The robbers probably ordered the pizzas and then waited for the driver to come, said Berkeley police Inspector Arnold Lui.

Woman Sustains Injuries From Assault

What began as a "beef" on a South Berkeley street last week likely ended in a bloody knife assault, police said.

A Berkeley woman suffered a split lip after a man, who she probably knew, attacked her on the 3300 block of California Street about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, said Berkeley police Inspector Arnold Lui.

While the woman reported that she fell onto the ground after the man punched her, police believe her attacker used a knife or similar object.

Lui said the details of the attack are unclear because the woman was uncooperative with police. The woman refused medical treatment.
