A Berkeley man was shot after two assailants tried to rob him in South Berkeley early Wednesday, police said.

Cassius Wilson, 22, was struck in the left buttock about 12:15 a.m. near the intersection of Sacramento and Ward streets after he tried to resist the two men, Berkeley police Lt. Cynthia Harris said.

One of the men pulled out a large handgun from his pocket and shot about five times after Wilson refused to give the pair money, Harris said. It is not known how many times Wilson was hit.

The assailants fled the scene in an unknown direction without taking any money, Harris said.

Wilson was not cooperative, so police had to rely on the statements of one witness for information about the crime, Harris said.

Paramedics took the man to Highland hospital in Oakland, but his condition could not be confirmed yesterday.

Police have not arrested any suspects in the shooting, Harris said.

The shooter is described as a black male in his 20s with a dark complexion, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 150 pounds, with a medium build. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt, Harris said.

The second man is described as a black male in his 30s, 6 feet tall, with a heavy build.
