Letter to Sports: Kwan was a Worthy Award Winner

I didn't respond to Dan Hodes's first article, but his follow up needs addressing ("Sorry About that Stench in the Celler," April 24).

Since when does an award given based on the previous years accomplishments require current year accomplishments to be included?

As to Sarah Hughes "whomping" Michelle Kwan at the Olympics, please note that Ms. Hughes was quite lucky the judges didn't agree on who should be in fourth place in the short program, since she received mostly fifth place and lower marks.

I think a visit to a Champions on Ice show with both skaters present will enlighten Mr. Hodes.

As to Ms. Coughlin's accomplishments, I have no doubt she is a worthy individual, but she is not any more qualified or worthy than Ms. Kwan.

The Sullivan Award encompasses more than "winning." The finalists have gone beyond the elitist belief that one must accept no monetary compensation to understand the ideal is to participate for the love of the sport.
