Sports in Brief: Track and Field Opens Season at USC

The Cal men's and women's track teams officially begin the 2002 outdoor season this weekend when they take part in the Trojan Invitational iat Cromwell Field in Los Angeles.

The invite, hosted by USC, is the first of two outdoor events the Bears are slated to compete in prior to hosting the Cal Invitational March 23.

Along with the Trojans, Cal will compete against Long Beach State, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Fullerton and Whittier.

San Diego Sate will also take part, fielding only a women's squad.

Competititon begins Saturday at 8:30 a.m., when the women's hammer gets the field events started. The women's 3000 meters will be the first running event, slated for an 11:40 a.m., start time. The final gun of the day will be for the men's 4x400 meter relay at 3:50 p.m.
