News in Brief: Solar Energy Proposed for Campus

UC Berkeley students and faculty, along with Greenpeace, held a press conference yesterday demanding the university reduce greenhouse emissions by installing solar panels on campus buildings.

"The chancellor is verbally committed to doing clean energy audits. We want a written commitment," said Cal-SERVE Senator Evan Holland.

The cost of panel installation has not been determined.

"Right now we're waiting for the chancellor to do the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Survey," said Greenpeace campaigner Kristin Casper. "The second step is to choose which buildings will be used. Then we can come up with a cost estimate."

Renewable energy would save electricity, earning back installation costs within the first five to ten years, Casper said.

Students and faculty appear supportive of the campaign, she added.
