The No. 5 Cal softball team travels to Tempe, Ariz., Friday to compete at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament hosted by Arizona State, the first of a series of seven tournaments for the Bears.

Senior Jocelyn Forest will take the mound for Cal against No. 16 Fresno State Friday at 11 a.m.

The Bulldogs return eight starters from last year's Western Athletic Conference championship squad.

At 5:30 p.m., the Bears take on Kansas. The Jayhawks went 32-27 (8-10 in the Big 12) last season and finished tied for third in the conference.

Saturday Cal begins its day late with a pair of afternoon games.

The Bears meet Texas at 3:30 p.m. and then take on UNLV at 5:30 p.m.

The Longhorns are coming off the first losing season in the program's six-year history in 2001.

The Rebels finished last year 26-30 and return five starters to the field this season.

Cal finishes its weekend against No. 17 Southwest Texas State, Sunday at noon. The Bobcats have struggled early in the season, compiling a 1-4 record.

Bears coach Diane Ninemire can reach 600 career wins with one Cal victory this weekend.

Cal takes on trojans

The No. 5 Cal men's swimming team travels to Los Angeles tomorrow for a showdown with No. 8 USC at McDonald's Swim Stadium.

The Bears (5-1, 2-0 in the Pac-10) are coming off a sweep of the Arizona schools two weeks ago at Spieker Pool. Cal took 11 of 16 events against the Sun Devils and seven of 13 against the Wildcats.

USC (4-3, 0-3) is coming off a dual meet victory over UC Irvine last weekend. The Trojans are led by junior Erik Vendt, a former NCAA champion in the 1500-meter freestyle.

In the all-time series, the Bears have a record of 11-48. Last season, Cal defeated the Trojans, 168.5-128.5 in Berkeley.

Soccer Inks Recruits

The Cal men's soccer team signed seven players to National Letters of Intent yesterday for the 2002 season.

The newest Bears are Pieter Berger, Justin Delacruz, Andrew Felder, Nick Hatzke, Matt Holtrust, Sam Peters and Tyson Wahl.

Berger and Wahl are both members of the Irvine Strikers soccer club. The two new Bears join four other current Cal players who played with the Irvine club.

"We are extremely pleased with this year's recruiting class," Cal coach Kevin Grimes said. "These players were recruited specifically to fill the roles of the players that graduated last season. Some of them will have an opportunity to contribute immediately this fall."

The Bears lost only three seniors from the 2001 squad that went 10-9-1 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1996.

"Our coaching staff and returning players are looking forward to having this outstanding recruiting class join the Cal soccer program this fall," Grimes said.
