The Cal women's rugby team routed Cal State Humboldt 43-0 in its first league match Saturday.

The Bears' victory came over a squad that finished No. 13 among the final 16 teams in the country last season.

Cal's scoring came from a variety of sources. Scrumhalf Rose Whitmore scored the first try followed by two more by Anna Kunkel and No. 8 Kimberly Young.

The final try in the first half came courtesy of prop Mary Jenson in addition to two conversions kicked by fullback Debbie Marshall.

The Bears kept rolling in the second half with outside center Mandisa Banjoko scoring a try in the first two minutes, followed by another by flyhalf Makenna Barris. Both conversions were kicked by Marshall.

The triumph followed up the previous weekend's preseason win over Santa Clara.

"(The win was due to) a commitment to rucks and an aggressive defense which fouled Humboldt's offensive strategy," prop Rachel Ebbet said. "As well as strong offensive support from the Cal forwards which allowed the backs to execute several score producing plays."

Bears Coach To Head U.S. Team

Cal assistant rugby coach Tom Billups was named head coach of the USA Rugby national team, officials announced Friday.

Billups, 37, will serve as coach for two years, including a trip to the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Currently, he is the head coach of the Collegiate All-American team.

As a player, Billups was captain of the national team in 1998 and was player of the year while competing for London's Harlequins club in 1998. He retired after the 1999 World Cup.
