Yeah, look at the cover again. It's Chancellor Berdahl.

Berdahl was born in the Midwest and the painting is set in the Midwest. There are other similarities, too ...

As we begin a new semester, I want to welcome the new students to campus and to The Daily Californian. This issue gives you a glimpse at the big events of last semester and a look ahead to this spring.

On page three, read about just how that man on the cover plans to ease your worries about housing and address issues of expansion, free speech, and diversity. Also on page three, catch up on news that broke while you were away on break.

Then, on page four, last semester's beat reporters tell you what you can expect from your local government leaders this spring.

The stories on page six take a look at events that have become an indelible part of campus history. And on seven, meet the new news man on campus.

I want to thank the writers and photographers for their contributions to this issue. And Amit for the good design. But I especially want to thank Ron and Nate for their help in the home stretch.
