Berkeley Rent Board Endorsements

Electing a progressive, pro-tenant slate for rent board is the only way to ensure that Berkeley's housing crisis will be addressed. With this in mind, we support the self-proclaimed affordable housing slate composed of Max Anderson, Paul Hogarth, Matthew Siegel and Judy Ann Alberti.

When it comes to the No. 1 problem facing UC Berkeley students, this diverse group of candidates has the unified goal of stopping rent hikes and unfair tenant evictions.

Anderson, an incumbent, has not only the experience and know-how that comes with having served on the board and the City Planing Commission, but concrete proposals to uphold the strength and purpose of the rent board and pursue landlord violators.

Hogarth, a recent UC Berkeley graduate and former Daily Cal columnist, has been one of the key players in the fight for affordable housing in his last two years at UC Berkeley. Hogarth's ability to fight for student interests and determination will make him a great addition to the rent board if he is elected.

Siegel hopes to address the bureaucracy issues that delay the rent board and deter its ability to impact housing policy in Berkeley.

Alberti's main concern in her campaign for rent board is the drastic increase in rent charged recently and the fact that citizens do not know their rights.

Candidate Peggy Schioler, although determined to argue the case of landlords to her demise, lacks the ability to listen or compromise with others. It is almost hard to believe that after living in Berkeley for more than 52 years, Schioler has absolutely no idea what the majority of Berkeley citizens want. In fact, the candidate's stance can best be summarized in her own words: "The purpose of the rent board isn't to further tenants rights." Enough said.
