Editorial: Profit With A Conscience

After years of enduring student protest against selling items made in sweatshops, the Cal Student Store has finally responded. In a move signifying UC Berkeley's renewed interest in world politics, the store pulled from its shelves last Thursday JanSport sweatshirts manufactured in Myanmar, a country notorious for human rights violations, and returned them to the manufacturer.

It appears that the Cal Student Store has at long last taken a stand against the use of materials fabricated at the expense of people living in Third World nations, and in doing so, the store should be applauded for its small efforts to keep its merchandise sweatshop-free.

However, the store's lack of knowledge regarding the origins of its products and delay in responding to the student consensus leaves much to be desired from the management.

In the future, the store should make greater efforts to track its goods and should be aware of such manufacturing discrepancies. In addition, the store should also investigate the production histories of the entire array of Cal logo-bearing products and anything else sold to students.

All segments of UC Berkeley should live up to its reputation as a progressive university of world status. Don't turn a profit at the expense of others.
