For perhaps the first time this season, Maite Zabala was challenged. After being kidded by teammates for not having to work too hard early in the season - she earned two consecutive shutouts without recording a single save - the senior goalkeeper for the No. 11 Cal women's soccer squad turned in an awesome performance Sunday to preserve a 1-1 tie to No. 19 Santa Clara.

After blanking San Jose State, 4-0, Friday for a new school record of 22.5 career shutouts, Zabala ensured that the Bears (8-0-1) would remain undefeated by recording nine saves Sunday, many of them coming in the two overtime periods.

Thanks to Zabala's excellent play, Cal took first place at the 2000 Adidas Bay Area Classic. To no one's surprise, Zabala was named the Outstanding Goalkeeper of the event.

Santa Clara - which manhandled No. 5 Stanford, 4-2, Friday - threw everything but the kitchen sink at Zabala but all to no avail.

Knowing that the Broncos could be a final four opponent in December, the Bears should be very grateful Zabala is on their side.
