Cal sophomore swimmer Anthony Ervin took

his place among the sport's best this morning when he claimed gold in the Olympic

50-meter freestyle.

At the Sydney Aquatic Centre, he tied U.S. teammate and training partner Gary

Hall, Jr. with a time of 21.98. The two become the first ever to tie in an Olympic

swimming sprint.

A two-time NCAA champion in the 50 and 100 free, Ervin is now the first swimmer

of black heritage to win an Olympic medal. He also took silver in the 4x100

freestyle relay last weekend.

Today's victory took place at approximately 2 a.m. Pacific Time and will be

broadcast tonight at 7 p.m. on NBC.
