The Cal baseball team has hired Ron Witmeyer as an assistant coach, Bears coach David Esquer announced on Friday.

Witmeyer was hired as the Bears' hitting and outfield coach. He and Esquer were members of Stanford's coaching staff and teammates on the Cardinal's 1987 national championship squad.

After finishing his career at Stanford in 1988 with another national title, Witmeyer went on to play for six years in the Oakland Athletics organization. He most recently served as head baseball coach at City College of San Francisco from 1997-2000.

Witmeyer's credentials as a college player include All-NCAA Regional and an All-College World Series selections. While at CCSF, Witmeyer had one player drafted and 21 others who went on to four-year colleges. His best season was in 1999, when his team went 23-18.

National Champion Crew Squad Crosses the Pond for Henley Royal Regatta

Members of the Cal men's crew will cross the Atlantic to participate in the Henley Royal Regatta beginning Friday.

Nine Bears crew members, including six rowers and a coxswain from Cal's 2000 national champion varsity eight boat, will row on the race in Henley-on-Thames, England. The other two rowers were on the Bears' national champion freshman eight crew.

Cal faces Trident R.C., a South African crew, in the first round of the competition on Friday. If the Bears emerge victorious, they need to win their semifinal race on Saturday to qualify for the final on Sunday.

Last year, Cal's crew lost in the final to the Cambridge University and Queen's Tower combination eight. The program enjoyed one of its finest hours ever on the Thames in 1948, when a U.S. Olympic squad composed entirely of Cal rowers won the gold medal.
