After adding some much-needed depth to his frontline, Cal men's basketball coach Ben Braun solidified the future of his backcourt last Thursday with the signing of combo guard Michael Lawson.

Lawson, a 6-foot-2 guard from Alhambra High School in Martinez, Calif., averaged 24.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game during his senior campaign. In addition to hitting 82 three-pointers this past season, Lawson also shot 94.7 from the charity stripe.

"We're excited to have Michael join our program," Braun said. "Michael had an outstanding high school career and comes to us with tremendous potential."

Lawson was selected to the second team All-Metro squad by the San Francisco Examiner for his efforts this past year. In four years at Alhambra, he scored a school-record 2,104 points.

Lawson becomes the third player to join the Bears this spring. 6-10 Gabriel Hughes and 6-11 Saulius Kuzminskas have already signed National Letters of Intent with Cal.
