Women's Basketball Rebounds To Victory

After expressing concerns over having only three healthy post players able to make the trip to Washington this past weekend, Cal women's basketball coach Marianne Stanley watched her team tie the school and Pac-10 record for rebounds in a game.

Go figure.

The Bears grabbed 64 boards against the Huskies Saturday en route to their first conference win this season. Although it is a team record, the mark came largely from the efforts of one player.

Shavaki Jackson owned the glass against Washington, posting 23 rebounds to go along with 18 points. Coupled with her 14-point, nine-board performance two nights earlier against Washington State, Jackson's efforts this weekend earned her Pac-10 Player of the Week honors - Cal's first since Feb. 26, 1996.

When asked whether she was aware that she was dominating the glass so effectively while the game was going on, the sophomore center admitted that she was ambivalent to the numbers she was piling up.

"I had no idea," Jackson said. "I was having a lot of fun. I was getting good position, and I got the ball off to my teammates in transition."

Jackson's work on the glass was the third-highest total for rebounds in a game in school history, and good enough for a second-place tie for the most rebounds ever in a Pac-10 game.

After being declared academically ineligible for the fall semester, the Berkeley High School graduate averaged 10.4 points and 6.9 rebounds through 11 games. Jackson's 11.9 points per game average during Pac-10 play is the highest on the Bears squad.

Slumping Senior

After leading Cal in scoring the previous two seasons, Paige Bowie is struggling to find her shot this year. Coming off an 11.9 ppg average in 1998-99, Bowie is only hitting 33.5 percent of her shots and averages just 8.8 ppg.

The wing's biggest struggles this season have been behind the arc. Bowie is only hitting 23.4 percent of her shots from long range, down from 31.9 percent last year. Her 77 shots taken from downtown this season are 41 more than her next-closest teammate, Courtney Johnson.

Stanley has been mystified by Bowie's inaccuracy.

"I really can't put my finger on it. I know she works hard on her shooting and spends extra time in the gym. We're just working on executing better, trying to set each other up - including Paige - to be in better position to score. If she could break out of that slump it would be a big boost to our offense."

The team's only senior and its co-captain may be a victim of her own success. Bowie has not been getting as many open looks this season, as teams have worked to take scoring opportunities from her.

While Bowie's point production has dropped, many of her teammates have increased their output. Juniors Lauren Ashbaugh, Kenya Corley and Johnson, along with Jackson, have all increased their scoring averages significantly this season.
