Sports Briefs: Football Transfers Bulk Up Offense

Fresh off the loss of its top two pass-catchers from 1999, the Cal football team got a boost from the enrollment of three junior college transfer receivers.

Charon Arnold (El Camino Junior College, Torrance, Calif.), Chad Heydorff (Glendale CC, Glendale, Calif.), and Derek Swafford (Ventura CC, Ventura, Calif.) all began class yesterday and will participate in practice this spring.

The trio will attempt to compensate for the loss of wide receivers Mike Ainsworth and Ronnie Davenport, who have not enrolled for the spring semester due to academic difficulties. They are not expected to rejoin the Bears by next season.

In addition to the receivers, JC quarterback Eric Holtfreter (Los Angeles Valley Junior College, Van Nuys, Calif.) has enrolled for the semester and will participate in spring drills.

Arnold, who runs a 4.4 time in the 40-yard dash, was signed in order to provide Cal with the deep threat it lacked last season. Meanwhile, Heydorff led the state in receptions (86) and yards (1,616) and earned first-team All-America honors.

Swafford, who nixed a football letter of intent with Northwestern in order to sign a professional baseball contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates, will also compete for snaps this spring. He began class yesterday after spending four years in the Pirates' minor league system and another year playing wideout at Ventura City College in Ventura, Calif.

Holtfreter will also see a lot of snaps this spring behind 1999 starter Kyle Boller, who is coming off a shoulder injury. Holtfreter threw for 2,667 yards this past fall as a sophomore at LA Valley JC.
