The No. 7 Cal softball team got off to a quick start to their weekend series with Oregon State, blanking the Beavers 9-0 in Corvallis, Ore.

The Bears benefited from a four-RBI performance from catcher Lindsey Ziegenhirt. The sophomore was only 1 for 2 on the day, but tallied her fifth home run of the year in the fifth inning with Jace Williams on first base.

"We started a little slow but we turned it on by the third inning," Ziegenhirt said. "When we had base runners, we did a good job of getting them in. We really had control of the long ball today."

Sophomore Jolene Henderson also had another strong outing, pitching a complete game shutout. The right-hander struck out seven Beavers while only allowing four hits and three walks. Henderson also provided her own run support, tallying two RBI -- both on sacrifice flies.

"I just want to help my team score, and that's what got it done," Henderson said. "It's all about progress and each weekend being better than the last. The team played great defense behind me and kept us strong."

The Bears will be back in action today at 2 p.m. at Lorenz field for game two.
