Dennis Levi, dean of the UC Berkeley School of Optometry, has agreed to become a sponsor of an initiative team and join a leadership committee of Operational Excellence, the campus announced Friday.

According to an announcement from faculty program head for Operational Excellence Andrew Szeri, Levi will join the Operational Excellence coordinating committee and become a sponsor of the Operational Excellence procurement team in order to replace current sponsor and Dean of Biological Sciences Mark Schlissel, who is leaving UC Berkeley to begin a new position as provost of Brown University July 1.

Levi will work along with Associate Vice Chancellor of Business and Administrative Services Ron Coley as a sponsor of the procurement team once Schlissel has brought Levi "up to speed" on the project, Levi said in an email. In his time as a sponsor, Schlissel worked to streamline procurement on campus through a collaboration with UC San Francisco and has scheduled a meeting with Levi to give him advice about the project.

Levi - who began his position as dean in 2001 - said in the email his primary goals for the procurement team include getting the best pricing possible from vendors for the campus, taking advantage of the scale of both UC Berkeley and UCSF in procurement and getting faculty support for using BearBuy, an online procurement system scheduled to be launched in the fall.

The coordinating committee Levi will join is responsible for reviewing proposals for various cost-cutting projects under the initiative. After its reviews, the committee - which is made up of initiative sponsors and representatives from the campus division of the Academic Senate, the Office of Equity and Inclusion, the ASUC and the Graduate Assembly - decides whether to recommend changes to the proposals or pass them on to the executive committee for final approval.

Levi said in an email that he has been involved in Operational Excellence thus far through implementing organizational simplification restructuring in the School of Optometry, as well as being "heavily involved in discussions" about the project.

"I have great confidence that Dean Levi's familiarity with the issues surrounding procurement, deriving from his academic and clinical administrative roles, will provide him with helpful insight that will benefit our campus OE efforts," Szeri said in the announcement.
