Associate Vice Chancellor of Business and Administrative Services Ron Coley announced in a campuswide email Tuesday that Seamus Wilmot has been appointed as the director of Parking and Transportation.

Wilmot, who began serving as interim director for the department in February 2009, spent 15 years working in the campus's Department of Recreational Sports, including serving at one point as the associate director in charge of monitoring the budget and overseeing business functions.

"We needed someone not only technically competent in the field, but someone who has high political acumen and the ability to navigate our environment," Coley said.

According to Coley, Wilmot - who succeeds Noel Pinto, the current director of parking enforcement for the city of Oakland - was selected from more than 60 applicants in a process that drew input from managers and staff in the department, members of the Oversight Committee on Parking and members of the Business and Administrative Services leadership team.

Wilmot, a UC Berkeley graduate, said in an email that his two years as interim director have allowed him to learn the complexities of providing access to a large number of campus constituencies and cited a diminishing number of parking spaces as the greatest challenge facing the department.

He said he will also continue to support alternative transportation to campus through services such as free bus passes for students, faculty and staff. Currently, 7 percent of students and 43 percent of faculty and staff members drive to campus, according to Wilmot.

"Parking and Transportation needs to have the resources to be able to continue to subsidize all of our alternative transportation programs as well as maintain our current inventory of parking spaces and if need be, have the ability to afford to build new parking spaces in the future," he said in the email.
