Op-ed ignores the positive environmental impact of banning plastic water bottles

Was Shawn Lewis' April 1 op-ed "Bottled Water Ban Will Hurt the Golden Bears" an April Fools' Day joke? Do you know there is a plastic island twice the size of Texas in the Pacific Ocean? We would be doing ourselves and the planet a huge favor to ban plastic water bottles on campus.

Yeah, it makes sense to drink bottled water where the tap water is obviously unsanitary, but Berkeley has some of the best tap in the world. Get a Nalgene bottle, and fill that sucker up. It's a huge waste of resources to drink water that has been purified in a factory, bottled in plastic and transported in semi-truck to get here.

And I think Cal Dining will be just fine without one fraction of their Coca-Cola contract - Crossroads just put in five new flat screen television monitors that say nothing but "Crossroads."

Berkeley is a leader in sustainability, and we should continue to be by not selling products that are wasteful and unnecessary.

I was ashamed to see such a materialistic, anti-sustainability article in The Daily Californian.
