Thousands of gallons of water are gushing from a major pipe on the north side of McCone Hall Monday evening, prompting a building evacuation and damaging rooms in the bottom floor of the building.

At around 6:30 p.m., McCone Hall and the walkway alongside North Gate Hall were flooded as 5,000 to 6,000 gallons of water per minute erupted from a main pipe, causing labs and the library in the basement of McCone Hall to become flooded, according to Berkeley Fire Department personnel on site.

Passerby Johnathan Buechner was riding his bike with his friend when they ran into what he called "a wall of water heading toward (them)."

"We heard this crazy gushing sound on the right side of the building, and it was like whitewater rapids," he said.

He and his friend climbed down the stairs and tried to get into the building, where he said the water was about 4 feet deep.

A professor and students with small buckets and trash cans began trying to remove water from the staircase to allow access to the lower floors prior to the fire department arriving.

UCPD and city firefighters were still pumping water from the bottom floor of the building as of press time.
