UC Berkeley will announce Friday morning whether five teams that had been slated to be cut will be reinstated, a campus spokesperson has confirmed.

The campus had initially stated that the decision about the teams - men's baseball, men's and women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse and men's rugby, which had been designated to become a varsity club sport - would be made Thursday, but later said more time was needed to speak with those who had pledged money to the reinstatement cause.

The group Save Cal Sports has reportedly raised $10 million to $12 million thus far with more donations pending. Campus officials have said $25 million would be needed to sustain the teams over the next 10 years.

Comcast SportsNet Bay Area reported early in the day Thursday that a decision had been made to reinstate the teams, but according to campus spokesperson Dan Mogulof, the review was not completed and the final decision had not been made until late in the day.

"The report by Comcast that the decision had been arrived at during the day Thursday is categorically false," Mogulof said.

In September, Chancellor Robert Birgeneau announced that the teams would be eliminated in order to save $4 million in the first year.
