An announcement on whether the five sports teams slated to be cut by the end of this academic year will be reinstated has been put on hold indefinitely, despite initial campus reports that an announcement would be issued Thursday by noon.

According to campus spokesperson Dan Mogulof, campus officials involved in the reinstatement talks are in the process of contacting individuals who have pledged money to the reinstatement cause in order to verify their commitment, which he said has taken longer than expected.

"We're not operating by ourselves here - some individuals are out of town," Mogulof said. "A process like this takes time."

Though athletics supporters have been holding discussions with campus administrators for the past four months, meetings headed by Vice Chancellor for University Relations Scott Biddy with athletics supporters began Jan. 31 as an opportunity for supporters to submit proposals on how to support the teams - men's baseball, women's lacrosse, men's and women's gymnastics and rugby, which has been designated a club sport - in the long-run.

Campus officials have said $25 million will be necessary to support the teams for the next 10 years, and Save Cal Sports has raised $10 million to $12 million thus far with more donations pending, according to organizer and former Cal baseball player Doug Nickle. Reinstatement supporters are also required to submit concrete proposals on how to sustain the sports teams in perpetuity, Mogulof said.

Chancellor Robert Birgeneau announced in September that the teams would be eliminated to try to save the campus $4 million in the first year.
