UCPD officers responded to an alleged robbery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in People's Park Saturday night.

Around 9:20 p.m., UCPD dispatched officers to the northeast corner of the park - bounded by Haste and Bowditch streets - where a female suspect, Harriet Killgore, allegedly approached and began an argument with a 55-year-old male victim who was lying in his sleeping bag, according UCPD Lt. Alex Yao.

Killgore then walked away from the victim but shortly returned with a stick, which she allegedly used to assault the victim.

According to Yao, Killgore then stole money from the victim's pocket in addition to his guitar, which she began to smash repeatedly against a nearby trash can.

Yao added that UCPD officers are unaware of any prior affiliation between the suspect and the victim or as to what the original argument entailed.

He said UCPD officers responded to the scene at 9:30 p.m. and arrested Killgore after about 20 minutes.

Killgore was booked on charges of robbery, public drunkenness and assault with a deadly weapon for her use of the stick.

After UCPD took custody of Killgore, she also allegedly kicked out the rear side window of the police car she was being transported in. She was fined with less than $400 worth of vandalism for the damage to the vehicle.

The victim suffered moderate injuries, including lacerations, and was transported to Alta Bates Hospital by the members of the Berkeley Fire Department, according to Yao.

Yao added that the case - still under investigation - will soon be forwarded to the Alameda County District Attorney's office for prosecution.

This assault is the second that took place in People's Park this month, following a Feb. 3 incident in which a victim was assaulted with a bottle and was similarly transported to Alta Bates sustaining injuries, according to the UCPD crime log.
