Nineteen UC students were transported today out of Egypt following days of political unrest in the country, UC Office of the President officials announced in a statement today.

UC faculty, a parent and a team of archeologists associated with UCLA, were also transported out of the country to Barcelona along with the students after the U.S State Department issued a travel advisory for the region.

The UC affiliates will remain in Barcelona until later this week when they are expected to return to California, according to a UCOP statement.

The removal follows eight days of protests across Egypt as citizens of the Arab country called for the removal of long-standing president Hosni Mubarak.

The 19 students were supposed to start a semester abroad program at the American University in Cairo yesterday.

The UCLA archeology team - composed of students, faculty and staff - had been on a dig 200 miles south of the capital city. The entire team was transported out of the country.
