As of last Thursday, Cal soccer had five new alumni accomplishments to boast - five men's players drafted into the MLS. The next day, former women's soccer captain Alex Morgan became the sixth recently drafted Bears alumn when she was selected as the first overall pick in the 2011 Women's Professional Soccer Draft.

Since her graduation from the university in December, Morgan, who had 45 goals throughout her career as a Bear, has not lost steam. After taking breaks from the collegiate season to assist the national team in qualifying for the 2011 World Cup, Morgan has been continually called up to join the national team roster.

"Alex as a goal-scorer is next to none," coach Neil McGuire said of Morgan in August.

That statement may not technically hold true after this season. Morgan was second to Stanford's Christen Press in Pac-10 scoring this year, and Press was chosen over Morgan for the Hermann Trophy.

That's not to minimize the fact that the Diamond Bar, Calif., native's selection as a finalist itself made program history, as did her WPS Draft position.

Morgan was selected by Western New York Flash, a Buffalo-based team that will be playing its first season in the league this year.

Morgan brings, as McGuire described, crucial goal-scoring skills to the Flash. In each of her seasons with the Bears, Morgan led the team in goals. When the national team lost to Mexico in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying tournament and needed to play a two-game series against Italy to earn their place in the cup, it was Morgan's stoppage time goal that won the first game for the Americans.

Morgan is still focused on adjusting to the professional level.

"I still have a long way to go, I think," she said in August. If she keeps up at this rate, it doesn't seem like Morgan will have to go much further.
