Former Cal women's soccer captain Alex Morgan was selected by Western New York Flash as the first overall pick in the 2011 Women's Professional Soccer Draft.
The Hermann Trophy runner-up made program history as the only Bear to ever go in the first round just a day after five Cal men's players were taken in the MLS SuperDraft. Morgan, who was absent for much of Cal's 2010 season preparing for the 2011 Women's World Cup with the U.S. national team, graduated in December in order to pursue professional opportunities.
Cal's top scorer for each of her four seasons with the Bears, Morgan has already proved herself as an asset on offense with the national team. The recognition she gained scoring crucial goals in the national team's quest for world cup qualification no doubt made her a desirable choice for the Flash.
Morgan isn't the only Cal women's senior still on the pitch. Megan Jesolva was selected as one of 24 players to attend a U-23 national team training camp.
