The Cal rugby team opened its season with a 69-3 thrashing of Sacramento State in Sacramento, Calif.

The Bears (1-0) handed the Hornets (5-1) their first loss of the season, and held Sacramento State scoreless in the first half.

Senior James Bailes put Cal up 3-0 three minutes into the match. The flyback/fullback's try in the 11th minute gave the Bears an 8-0 advantage, and the score stood 20-0 after his goal following Seamus Kelly's try in the 20th minute.

The Bears tacked on 15 more points before halftime.

Sacramento State captured the first points of the second half on Sundi Cummings' 40-meter penalty kick, but the Hornets were shut out for the remainder of the game.

Junior Mark Richter and sophomore Brendan Daly notched two tries, and nine different Bears scored in the match.

The Bears will travel to Los Angeles to compete in the UCLA Tournament this weekend. Cal is slated to play seven matches on the weekend, and will open with a 10:30 tilt against USC on Saturday.
