The Berkeley Fire Department responded to a small grease fire at Saul's Restaurant and Delicatessen in North Berkeley late Friday morning, though the fire had already been extinguished when the fire crew arrived on the scene.

According to Sabina Imrie, the department's assistant fire chief for special operations, the department received the call from the restaurant, located at 1475 Shattuck Ave., at approximately 10:40 a.m. The fire crew worked primarily to ventilate the restaurant, since the fire had already been contained, and left the scene by about 11:35 a.m., she said.

"We were working on ensuring that the fire was extinguished and getting the smoke out of the restaurant," Imrie said.

According to a waitress at the restaurant, Marissa Williams, the fire was extinguished by the restaurant's head chef Jonathan Bradbury and head prep cook Edith Rodriguez.

Saul's owner Peter Levitt said the incident was the first fire to occur in his 17 years at the restaurant, adding that the fire occurred before the lunch rush and that there were few diners in the restaurant at the time.

Levitt said the restaurant - whose hours usually run from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. - closed from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. as a result of the fire and was in need of "clean up" maintenance, but suffered no real damage.
