Berkeley Police Department officers responded to an armed robbery at the McDonald's restaurant in South Albany - near the Berkeley border - early Wednesday morning.

At approximately 5:15 a.m., a male suspect wearing a black ski mask and dark clothing pointed a gun at a male employee at the restaurant located at 1198 San Pablo Ave.

The suspect hit the employee in the head with the pistol and forced him to hand over cash. The suspect then ordered the victim and three other employees to get into the freezer, according to a statement from Berkeley police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss.

Kusmiss said in the statement that the suspect left on foot, leaving a trail of cash in an alley north of the scene. The employees waited until the suspect was gone before calling 911.

According to the statement, the male employee who was hit with the pistol sustained a laceration to his head - which was deemed minor - that was treated at the scene by Berkeley Fire Department paramedics.

The employees were unable to provide police with a detailed description of the suspect due to his dark clothing, according to the statement.
