Mariposa Bakery

If you are up for a good walk or willing to take public transportation to this local "hole in the wall," go for it. Mariposa Bakery is quaint and the food is delicious, with everything from pizza to bagels baked fresh daily. If you are in the mood for something sweet, try their decadent red velvet cupcakes or their sour cream coffee cake. A truly decadent range of food options, this place is great to go if you want great, fresh food and if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Berkeley.

Sfoof's Woofle Cafe

Located across from campus on Bancroft Avenue, this corner restaurant serves just about any type of waffle you could imagine. Though they have pre-conceived creations such as the "Hansel and Gretel" or the "Ruby Chill", they welcome customers to create their own creations and even have a competition for those who come up with the tastiest creations of the week. From hummus to fruit to a "cinnamon role" type concoction, Sfoof's allows for any kind of waffle you could imagine. In addition, they also offer salads and panini sandwiches, some named after famous buildings on campus (the B.O.A.L.T), characters in literature (the H.A.M.L.E.T), or government institutions (the I.R.S.).

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

From June 25 to Sept. 19, SF MOMA will be offer a new exhibition with a preview of various art collections such as the Fisher Collection, with famous works by Alexander Calder, Gerhard Richter, Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and many others. Tickets are available from SF MOMA at (415) 357-4000.

Civic Center Plaza, San Francisco

Soccer fans in San Francisco will have a chance to watch and celebrate the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. People will be able to gather to watch broadcasts of World Cup games in the Civic Center Plaza on a 13- by 18-foot screen on the western side of the plaza. Additional opportunities to watch and root for the home team will be available in other sections of Union Square. For more information, visit

Memorial Glade

Berkeley's campus is undeniably beautiful. But when you're rushing to class or trying to find shelter from an unexpected downpour, sitting and appreciating the pulchritudinous surroundings isn't too high on the priority list.

Whether you're taking classes or just staying in Berkeley for the summer, on Memorial Glade, the living is easy. Join the sun soakers, dog owners, Frisbee throwers, guitar strummers and students studying under the sun. No matter how populated it gets, there's always room for lounging and there's no such thing as a bad spot on the verdant knoll.

Lather yourself with a layer of SPF, relax on the grass and admire Doe Library's Romanesque architecture. Listen to the euphonious Campanile chimes without the feeling that you're running late. Replace habitual Facebook voyeurism with the (slightly) less creepy pastime of live people-watching behind the safety of sunglasses.

Studying, socializing and siestas are all perfectly acceptable activities on the Glade. When the sun is shining and the weather's right, there simply isn't a better place to enjoy the summer in the heart of Berkeley's picturesque setting.

I enjoy eating meat, a lot. Burgers, steak, chicken and pork, I love them all. Before living in Berkeley, I had never considered abandoning the carnivorous tradition of American culture, but upon my first Cheeseboard outing, all of that changed. I would become a vegetarian if I could eat that pizza everyday, and this summer, that may very well happen.

Cheeseboard's one daily pizza never disappoints. It could be zucchini and pesto or corn and lime paired with an irresistible combination of cheeses and it still satisfies all tastes and fills the largest of stomachs.

In the summertime, the Cheeseboard experience is irreplaceable. Whether you enjoy the outdoor patio-like setting or the grass median with cars passing by, the atmosphere sure is something. Listening to the live jazz music and eating the cheesy, veggie filled pie really make a great summer afternoon

These days the crowd tends to turn to frozen yogurt when in search of a sweet, iced dessert. It is the healthy version of ice cream, they say, but when it comes to a summertime frozen treat, you can never go wrong with Ici ice cream, a classic Berkeley go-to.

Here - at Ici's - ice cream is homemade and so are the hand rolled cones filled with a delightful chocolate surprise. Each day the store offers 11 different flavors that challenge your taste buds and question your favorites; yesterday, you fell in love with the earl grey, but today the honey lavender stole blew your mind; tomorrow, you think you will try the rose vanilla. You can never leave your heart with one flavor and you will keep coming back for more.

Simply put, the gourmet, organic ice cream is to die for.
