Democrats have held both of California's seats in the United States Senate since 1992. The nationwide political mood, unfavorable to Democrats, threatens to change that this November. Three Republicans - State Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, former HP CEO Carly Fiorina and former Congressman/educator Tom Campbell - are all within 7 percent of incumbent Democrat Barbara Boxer, according to a recent Rasmussen Reports poll. After the Scott Brown victory in Massachusetts, Democrats would be remiss to take anything for granted in this climate.

For the Democratic nomination, we obviously encourage a vote for Boxer. She has been a principled defender of abortion rights, the environment and access to health care. Her vote against the Iraq War testifies to her willingness to do the unpopular when she believes it is the right thing to do. We hope she campaigns with the realization that this cycle is likely to prove much more challenging than past ones were for her.

Among Republicans, the race is highly competitive. Chuck DeVore is running as the Tea Party candidate. While we respect his convictions, we see his ideology as out-of-touch with the mainstream California voter. Carly Fiorina represents a standard Republican ideology, while Tom Campbell has a record of being a fiscal conservative with liberal positions on social issues. We see this fusion as highly representative of the California mainstream. He's a pragmatic leader whose commitment to balanced budgets does not come second to pledges of "no new taxes." For these reasons, we recommend a vote for Tom Campbell for the Republican nomination for senator.
