Making a decision at the ballot booth can be difficult, but voters in both the Democratic and GOP primaries for California secretary of state won't find this to be the case.

The only Democrat in the race, incumbent Debra Bowen, is running unopposed for her party's nomination. Bowen has been a leader in the fight to secure the integrity of our voting machines - indeed, she was recognized for this with a Profile in Courage Award. Considering that the secretary of state's most important duty is to see that state elections are fairly conducted, this speaks particularly strongly in her favor.

Republican real estate developer Damon Dunn is running against Orly Taitz, a leader in the "birther" movement that alleges President Barack Obama is not constitutionally eligible to hold his office. Dunn wins our endorsement for the nomination by virtue of being the reasonable candidate in the race.

While we are concerned about the fact that he voted for the first time May 2009, we are also hopeful that his background as a person of color who grew up poor may be useful at expanding voter registration to disenfranchised groups.
