Boalt Hall School of Law Professor John Yoo continues to be the target of demonstrations and pranks, the latest being toilet paper that bears his name and the text of a United Nations convention against torture, which appeared in Boalt Hall bathrooms Tuesday.

Yoo, the author of alleged torture memos during his time as a deputy assistant attorney general in the Bush administration, has been the focus of numerous forms of campus protest since earlier this academic year when he returned to campus following a semester-long sabbatical.

"Pranks can convey serious messages," said artist and activist Matt Cornell, who created the toilet paper and placed it.

But according to Boalt Hall spokesperson Susan Gluss, the impact was felt most strongly by the school's morning custodian. She said the mess left behind required the custodian two extra hours to clean.

"I chose toilet paper because it's something people use every day and because John Yoo turned international human rights law into toilet paper," Cornell said. "It seemed like a very natural observation to me."

The preamble and 16 of 33 articles of the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment were printed on the toilet paper.

"This toilet paper made possible by John Yoo, Professor of Law," the toilet paper stated.

Yoo did not respond to a request for comment.

A video recorded by freelance journalists Josh Wolf and Jacob Crawford shows Cornell swapping out toilet paper stocked by the law school for that of his creation.
