The Cal women's golf team continued its strong play in the second round of the Pac-10 championships to secure what looks like a top three finish.

Although the Bears' day two collective score of 305 was 18 strokes worse than their first round performance, every other team's performance dropped significantly as well. It was still the third-best team score at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.

Some possible explanations are disagreeable weather -- it rained most of the day -- and a communal fatigue among players.

Senior Roseanne Niven led Cal's second round with a 73 (+1), boosting her individual rank from 25th to 8th. Her experience as the team's only senior is a large part of her endurance that carries her through the tournament.

Sophomore Joanne Lee, who shot a 67 in the first round, still has a hold on third place individually despite turning in a 77 on day two.

Junior Pia Halbig finished the day with a three over par (75) to move up in the rankings from 25th to a tie for 13th

Freshman Jacqueline Williams shot an 80 to earn a 22nd place tie individually.

Sophomore Emily Childs continues to struggle, finishing the day with an 89 to make her the 47th best of 50 golfers.

UCLA snatched the lead from Arizona State with a collective day two score of 298. Two of the Sun Devils' golfers did not participate in the second round.

The final round tees off today at 8 a.m.
