A Berkeley Police Department patrol car and a civilian vehicle collided at the intersection of Telegraph Avenue and Haste Street at approximately 1:20 a.m. early Sunday morning.

The Berkeley police officer sustained minor injuries to his neck and back and was sent to a hospital. None of the passengers in the civilian vehicle were hospitalized, according to Sgt. William Bradshaw of the California Highway Patrol.

Berkeley Police Department representatives could not be reached for additional information Sunday.

Bradshaw said the civilian car ran a red light while heading northbound on Telegraph and collided with the patrol car traveling westbound on Haste.

Following the collision, the civilian car crashed into a traffic light pole, deploying its air bags.

Sam Boyd, a passenger in the civilian car, said he and the car's four other occupants were trying to find a highway entrance while returning from a concert in West Berkeley.

Boyd, a high school student from Newark, Calif., said he and his friends sustained no serious injuries, but that he was "pretty shook up" after the car struck and wrapped around the pole.

"As long as I'm not dead, it's a good day for me," Boyd said as he stood at the intersection, surrounded by the scattered pieces of the two cars' bumpers.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, as is often policy for vehicle collisions involving local law enforcement, according to Sam Morgan, spokesperson for the department.

The department will investigate the conditions of the collision to determine what caused the accident and who is at fault, Morgan said.

"From our standpoint, it appears to just be a standard collision," Morgan said.

He added that such investigations generally take eight to 12 days.

Boyd said none of the five occupants in the vehicle were inebriated, adding "we are all pretty straight-edged."

Morgan said the department will determine whether or not the driver of the civilian vehicle was intoxicated once it receives toxicology reports.

No arrests were made in connection with the car accident, Morgan said.
