A Berkeley Police Department patrol car and a civilian vehicle collided at the intersection of Telegraph Avenue and Haste Street at approximately 1:20 a.m. early Sunday morning.

According to Sgt. William Bradshaw of the California Highway Patrol, the Berkeley police officer was sent to an undisclosed hospital following the accident, sustaining minor injuries to his neck and back. None of the passengers in the other car were sent to the hospital.

The civilian car ran a red light and collided with the patrol car, Bradshaw said. The driver of the civilian car, who is a minor, was not intoxicated, he said.

Sam Boyd, a passenger in the civilian car, said that he and his friends were trying to find a highway entrance while returning from a concert at the 924 Gilman Street Club in West Berkeley when they collided with the police vehicle.

Following the collision, the civilian car crashed into a traffic pole. Boyd said he sustained no serious injuries.

"As long as I'm not dead, it's a good day for me," Boyd said as he stood among the wreckage.

According to Boyd, none of the five occupants in the vehicle were inebriated, adding "we are all pretty straight-edged."

The California Highway Patrol took over investigation of the incident to "prevent bias on the department's part," Bradshaw said.
