The 2010 NCAA women's swimming championships began today in West Lafayette, Indiana. Through one day, Cal sits in third place with 122 points, trailing only Stanford (142.5) and Georgia (134).

After fast swimming in the preliminaries in the morning, the contenders returned to the pool for finals in the evening.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay final, the Bears' Hannah Wilson, Colleen Fotsch, Erica Dagg and Liv Jensen took third place behind Arizona and the Cardinal with a time of 1:28.97.

Distance swimmer Lauren Boyle took second in the 500-yard freestyle, after finishing first in the preliminaries. Her time of 4:37.18 was the fastest of her life and just .05 seconds behind the winner, Allison Schmitt of the Bulldogs.

Another of the Bears' impressive efforts came with Jensen's win in the 50-yard freestyle. She finished in 22.04 seconds, edging out Stanford's Elizabeth Webb by .03 seconds.

The foursome of Fotsch, Alexandra Ellis, Amanda Sims and Wilson took seventh in the 400-yard medley relay.

Three faculty records were broken to kick off the first day of competition: the 400-yard medley relay by a Wildcat foursome, the 200-yard freestyle relay by a Cardinal foursome and the 200-yard freestyle by Stanford standout Julia Smit.
