The Cal women's golf team sits at the head of the 11-team pack after the first round in the Peg Barnard invitational in Stanford, Calif.

Junior Pia Halbig led both her team and the entire first round with a par score of 71.

Cal has a collective score of 296 (12 over par), an eight-stroke cushion against second placed teams Stanford and Washington.

Sophomore Joanne Lee golfed a 74, earning the fifth place individual spot.

Senior Roseanne Niven is close behind with a score of 75, putting her in a tie for sixth place individually.

Recent addition to the team sophomore Daniela Holmqvist shot a +4 to claim the tie at 10th place.

Sophomore Emily Childs is in a tie for 29th with a score of 79.

Cal's performance marks a dramatic turnaround from its performance earlier in the week, an 11th place finish in the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge tournament in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

The Bears will tee off the second and final round of the tournament at 8 a.m. today.
