"We should beat (Stanford) without a problem", said sophomore Joanne Lee after her strong finish at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge earlier this week.

The 36-hole, two-day Peg Barnard Invitational that starts today at 9:00 a.m. in Stanford, Calif., will give Lee a chance to prove that. The No. 10 Cal women's golf team will take the field as one of 11 schools, competing against Fresno State, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Oregon, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Texas, Stanford, UC Davis and Washington.

The competition looks to be just as stiff as the Bears' season opener, the Northrop Grumman Challenge, in which Cal finished 11th of 15.

"We're all really psyched about (the Peg Barnard Invite)," said Lee, who finished in a tie for 12th individually in the Northrop Grumman Challenge. "We want to make a big comeback."

Whereas three of the five golfers Cal fielded for the Northrop Grumman Challenge had never before been on the Palos Verdes Golf Club course, many of Cal's golfers have much more experience on the Stanford course.

"My mentality on the course will be a lot different than in Palos Verdes, a lot more visualization," Lee said. "I'll focus on trying to get my tempo back."

The tournament will have a shotgun start, meaning the golfers will be separated into smaller groups and started off on different holes.

The par-72, 6,154-yard Stanford Golf Course is notorious for its 12th hole, which has two large trees down the middle of the fairway. It is considered by some to be one of the most difficult individual holes in Northern California.
