It would be so easy to open that textbook, print those lecture notes and buckle down to work. But hey-since you're already here, you might as well stay awhile.

Welcome to The Daily Californian's inaugural Final(s) Issue. As students and journalists, we know a thing or two about procrastination, sleep deprivation and deadlines, which makes us uniquely qualified to guide you through the long, cold weeks ahead.

Maybe you'll be spending your waking hours as a model UC Berkeley student, hitting the books. We bring you the lowdown on how football players and transfer students are trying to pencil study time into their hectic schedules. Experts also talked to us about the cognitive benefits that may come with UC Berkeley's now longer-than-usual dead week.

And then, of course, there are the other benefits-the kind that involve sensual study breaks, road trips, online anonymous confessions, YouTube videos and TV seasons, various brands of energy drinks and other not-so-educational forms of entertainment.

Just as a group study session is sometimes what it takes to gear up for an exam, we couldn't have put this issue together without the dedication and quick thinking of our staff. Many thanks to those who put aside their own studying time to lend us a hand instead.

So whether you open this issue in the cavern of the Main Stacks or the comfort of your own room; whether you read this as finals are beginning or as the sun's beginning to rise; read on. You never know-you just might learn something.

-Will Kane & Stephanie M. Lee
