Deadline for UC Applications Extended Due to Technical Issues

The UC application submission deadline has been extended to midnight Thursday due to an unknown problem that slowed down the university's online application system.

The slowdown occurred on the evenings of Nov. 29 and Nov. 30, according to a university statement. UC Director of Undergraduate Admissions Susan Wilbur said that a preliminary analysis indicates the problem was not one of capacity or volume.

"Each year we do rigorous stress tests on the system prior to the opening of the application filing period," she said. "We have planned for the heavy load at the end of the filing period."

The university admissions Web site has been updated to reflect the change, Wilbur said, and messages were sent to schools, college counselors and campus communications offices, as well as through the online messaging service Twitter.

By the morning of Nov. 30, 96,797 applications were received. This number increased to 126,351 by 6 a.m. the next day. Before 4 p.m. Dec. 1, an additional 2,591 applications were submitted.

"These numbers illustrate two points: the number of applications that come in on the last day is substantial, and many students were able to submit in the last day," Wilbur said.

Like the UC system, the California State University system is experiencing difficulties with accepting applications in a year with a record number of applicants.

Due to a $564 million state budget cut this fiscal year to CSU's general fund, the system plans to reduce its total enrollment of nearly 450,000 students by about 40,000 over the next two years, according to Erik Fallis, a spokesperson for the CSU Chancellor's Office.
