When this decade began, we were in elementary school, rocking baby teeth, yo-yos and hard copies of Willennium like it was still the '90s.

But it wasn't. It was time for puberty and fresh entertainment.

The following lists were compiled through lengthy debates and multiple votes among the arts staff. Like all lists, they are imperfect. No one person will agree with every selection. But their point is to spark discussion on what our generation valued in the arts this decade.

This list reflects a uniquely American experience. Many works seem to bear the weight of their times, especially the long shadow of 9/11 and its consequences. Our top picks reflect this decade's aura of rapid change and self-evaluation, with our top film as a historical allegory for modern society, and our top album a portrait of the uncertain future.

These are the arts that formed the backdrop of our youth-the movies that blew our minds for the first time, the music we danced to awkwardly in high school. They will beckon our nostalgia as we continue to age.

This was our decade; this is what it had to offer.
