Berkeley Chamber of Commerce members held a meeting Monday with campus officials to discuss ways to link local businesses with the campus.

In addition to logistical questions, such as how to initiate UC Berkeley business deals, campus officials

addressed the need to match campus needs with products local businesses could provide.

According to Caleb Dardick, UC Berkeley director for local government and community relations, the campus would like to see strategic partnerships with local businesses.

"I would like to see this partnership have greater visibility," Dardick said. "We should find as many ways as possible to keep our business local."

Roesia Gerstein, the campus' Supplier Diversity Program coordinator, said there is a need to look to the future when discussing business deals between the campus and vendors. She also noted efforts to update outreach from the "19th century ... into the 21st century."

According to Dardick, part of this change entails student involvement and moving from business-focused to consumer-focused dealings.

"Education with students is an ongoing effort," Dardick said. "It would be great ... (to) connect ... students as consumers and educate them about buying locally."

He added that the meeting is part of an ongoing conversation between the chamber and campus representatives.
